I assume as much.
Good to know, thanks, wasn't aware of this 'defect'.
Dunno, never bothered to learn much about amp design beyond what to look for spec-wise that's likely to meet my performance goals.

I'd just like to add a comment about amp selection.
I have have both a pair of 604-8III's in 9cuft BB cabs and a A-5 with 803 horns.
I listen to mostly Jazz and Rock no Classical or large orchestral pieces. I listen at low to moderately loud levels. My needs for Altec sound is geared toward in home HiFi sound reproduction.
My amps are all DIY low powered tube builds. I really enjoy what Altec brings to the table for this .
Have fun!
Hi DrummerWill, What kind of DIY stuff do you have ? I can't tell by looking at the thumb-nail. Like I said in a earlier post, I first heard the 604-8h11's at a friend of a friends home and he was running BottleHead gear in front of his speakers to great effect. I have never done anything more advanced than soldering in caps, inductors, and resistors for x-over's, so I am a little afraid of a complete amp build. Also I have read quite a few posts on other sites where these kit builders were always fighting noise issues (ie. hum). I have recently looked into Ming Da gear from Pacific Valve. Mr. Baker from Response Audio recommends this brand without hesitation as it is a good performer in stock form, but has huge upside with proper modding. From everything that I have read, his reputation in the Modding community is beyond reproach with many satisfied customers. I personally Have never had him work on anything, but I have taken leaps of faith in the past (hell I'm married). Another manufacturer I was looking at was Mcalister Audio out of Canada however, I do not know much about them. Take care.
What you are looking is stand of a few of my DIY amp collection. On the top is a Stereo I.T. coupled 2A3/300B SET with parafeed Silver outputs, the middle as pair of Curio tweaked out Dynaco Mark III's and on the bottom a Stereo I.T. coupled 45/2A3 PP with Silver outputs.
I run all my source signals thru a Behringer DEQ2496 before going to an amp, Altec's love the DEQ.
Have fun!

Hi Will - I see your A5 lurking in the corner of the photo.
Care to post another? I'm running the same thing, pretty much.
How about a vintage Fisher intergrated amp.....off ebay. Plenty come up, even some restored ones....and that would fit into your budget.
If you go vintage seperates...that would run you more. But you could do something like a NAD 1700 preamp/tuner with a remote and a vintage set of tube mono blocks..... and probably stay with-in your budget.
I already own a restored Fisher 500c, so maybe I'll save my pennies and give it a try before buying. If I do buy It will probably be Ming Da, or Melody as they seem to be in my price range. Anyway, thanks to all of you for your input, I appreciate it. Merry Christmas.
Geezer I would run with what you got for now... if you like the tone/sound and would like to try monoblocks... I went with Bottlehead gear... gotta nice sound through my 604's in 620 cabs....
I mention this because you talk/post of modding some Ma ding amps... with bottlehead and a few other diy amps out there you get great support.. the bottlehead forum always have help a few posts away... their literature that comes with their gear is top notch... I am looking to get another kit... btw I am running the old paramour 2A3 sets.........but I feel if you are comfortable modding, you should go all the way, by the time you chase the mod genie with the other pre built amps, you might as well start form scratch and learn something along the way....
Doc and crew are first rate and will take care of you if you need help....
I am just a satisfied customer and like spreading the word.....

Excellent post Chris, The "good" Doctor and the Bottlehead group have been supplying the D.I.Y. community with S.O.T.A. Tube designs for years.
Bottlehead product are a great way to get into SET sound!
Sorry Pano, no pics of most recent A-5.
But I can tell you I've tweaked them a bit by added foam to the Horn curves. This really was the most effective change I made to the cabs.
The crossover I use with the 803B horns and 299-8a drivers is a DIY 500hz with a mix of Oil caps and Solens and Foil type Air-core inductors.
I tried cheaper wire type air-core inductors. But found Foil type far exceeds the performance of the round wire type.
A-5's may not be for everyone, but I really love mine.
Have Fun!
